Description
One of a series of paintings of his wife Ida, usually with her back turned enigmatically to the viewer and situated within a stark, minimalist interior, by Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi (1864-1916). This one is uncannily similar to another painting of Ida at the writing desk itself. Hammershoi's remarkably restrained, quietly unsettling vision seems to prefigure so much that was to follow in the twentieth century, not least surrealism (step forward, Rene Magritte) and minimalism. Good to know that Hammershoi's is finally getting the recognition he deserves; one of his paintings sold at Sotheby's recently for over one million pounds.
