Stately and elegant, a sailboat and her crew meet the day's adventures on the water.
Al Fresco invites us to join the crew on this sailboat, tossing our day’s obligations to the wind and getting away from it all for awhile. The pink glow of the sun’s rays on the clouds could be either the light of dawn, forecasting a warm, beautiful day filled with adventure, or the last glow as twilight gives way to the final sunset, and we are on our way back, happy and satisfied, after the perfect day on the waves.
Such is the beauty of representational art, that it allows us to enter into the painting and make it our own, creating the story behind the image in accordance to our own experience, desires, dreams, and feelings. From one day to the next, every time we see the painting, the story may change with our moods – or we may find that, regardless of how many times we view the painting, we always start the story at the same point, and take pleasure in following through its chapters, one by one, as we view the work.
Artwork such as Al Fresco is a reminder that life is not always work, and even if we are not one of the fortunate few who can afford to own and operate a sailboat, we are free to travel and meet adventure through the books we read, the thoughts we think, and the artwork with which we surround us.
Because that’s what art – representational art – does: it takes us places. It encourages us to explore, it joins us on the journey, it calls to us to remember our dreams and goals and not give up on them – and on days when we feel like doing so, it reminds us of why we began dreaming those dreams in the first place.
